(11/28/01, 5 p.m. ET) -- Kid Rock's Cocky captures the Number Seven spot on the Billboard 200 album chart with sales of 222,875 copies in its first week. However, the Kid was no match for fellow rockers Creed, whose Weathered topped the chart with sales of more than 880,000.
LAUNCH asked Rock if he was concerned about strong out-of-the-box sales of Cocky. "No. I sold 5,000 records--on a record that sold 10 million--the first week the last time, and I'm prepared to go out and work it again: go through the same chains, the same...get the wheel turning once again," he said. "I would have actually rather preferred not to have any hype on it--to just put it out there, sneak it out there and let singles develop, and develop the record so it stays out there and people have a chance to soak it up. I think what happens is that people who run out to buy these records are tired of them in two weeks. They play them out to death, but I do have a lot of other music in the arsenal, so as quick as they can take it I'll keep putting it out."
Kid Rock's debut album, Devil Without A Cause, was certified diamond by the Recording Industry Association Of America for sales of 10 million copies. His compilation album, History Of Rock, has been certified double platinum for sales of two million. The first single from Cocky, "Forever," is Number 20 on the Radio & Records Alternative chart.

I am somehow relieved to hear him talk like this. I knew Devil sold very few copies before he started the machine, but 5,000! And wasn't Bawitaba already out and getting MTV play by the time Devil was released?

Ah, that's right, Bullgod. I think Trucker Anthem can be another Bawitaba. But I agree with him that with Devil it was great to have to singles come to light over time, instead of having to figure out what to send out first. We don't seem to have that luxury now with the big rock star machine going.

When I am listening to TA with my headphones on I totally feel like I am at the show, which means I look like a freak (cause I'm power-walking at the time) and singing along and not realizing how loud I am getting and how shocking the lyrics can be to Ethel- Senior-Citizen-strolling-in-the-park. Pretty embarassing, plus the head banging, what a display. Can you feel that?

He can be as confident as he wants, but three years does make a difference. In 1998-1999, he was competing with teen and Latin pop. Now (thank God), he is competing with the resurgence of rock, rap and R&B singers and groups backed by bands. If he is looking to make a move on next week's charts, good luck because he has to compete with releases by Busta Rhymes, Ludacris, Smashmouth and the soundtrack from the Concert for New York, plus Pink should see a boost in sales since she was on the Howard Stern show this morning.
